Connecting to the v-Business Grid

This tutorial explains the method of connecting to the v-Business Grid.  If you have installed a local Sim and wish to connect to that sim directly please see the amendment to the tutorial at the bottom.

First you will need a virtual world client to connect. Linden Labs open sourced their virtual world client for Second Life under a GPL license.  Please do not look at the source code of this viewer if you would like to be in anyway involved in the development of OpenSimulator.

Several forked versions of the Linden Labs client are now available on the internet.  The version we will be focusing on as part of this Tutorial is called Hippo.  You can download the hippo client from here.  http://forge.opensimulator.org/gf/project/opensim-viewer/frs/   For the purpose of this tutorial we will not be explaining how to install the Hippo Client for Linux.

  • First click on the following link and select run.  http://tinyurl.com/copu26
install
  • This will take about 2 to 3 minutes to complete depending on available bandwidth.
 setup
  • When this process is complete you may receive a security warning asking you if you want to continue to install this client.  Select Run
 security
  • You will now be asked to select a directory to install the Hippo application. The default directory should be fine.  Select Install and Continue

  • Throughout the installation and the running of the client if you have firewall software installed you may be requested to open the firewall. You need several outbound ports open to access the v-business server. Please agree to these to continue

  • If all was successful you should now see the following screen.
  • Press Start and allow any additional firewall requested ports to be opened permanently.

  • There are dozens of grids for Opensimultor and the default grid on Hippo is OSGRID.
  • You need to change the setting from OSGRID to v-Business.
  • You do this using the grids button. After you start Hippo select the Grids button
 osgrid
  • Select the Add button and type on the login URI http://grid.v-business.com:8002
 add
  •  Now select the get grid info button. This should populate your client with information from the v-Business server.
  • Now press the apply button and then the default button
 grid info
  • Now Select OK and you can enter your user name and password that you registered.
  • If you have not registered please select register an avatar from the menu to the left of this page.
