Installing Open Simulator
Open Simulator Installation
This tutorial is a guide only for the installation of an Opensim environment on a server for the purpose of installing a local copy of Opensim. Once Opensim is running in a local mode you can then begin the process of attaching this version to the v-Business Grid. The process of connecting your Simulator to the grid will be described in the Connecting Sim tutorial. Please note: OpenSimulator is still at an alpha code maturity stage, there is absolutely no guarantee that functionality works or is stable, even in the numbered releases. Certain features may not work either because the code is in rapid evolution, or because functionality expected by the Linden Labs Second Life viewer has simply not been implemented yet.
Windows Installation
The simplest and easiest method to install an OpenSimulator Server is in Windows. You can either compile your own binary based on the source code or you can download the current binary. For the purpose of simplification of this tutorial we will not be providing details on how to compile a binary for Opensim.
The current source code for Opensim Windows is located on the http://dist.opensimulator.org web site. http://dist.opensimulator.org/opensim-0.6.5-release.zip Although we will not describe in detail the process of installing the subversions for opensim in this tutorial a video installation was created by a member of the VUC Mohax that provides a very high level overview of how to to this.
The installer for version 6.6 of Opensim can be accessed directly here. http://forge.opensimulator.org/gf/project/osinstaller/frs/
- Click on the link and select – Run

You will then be asked to Run the application and you may receive a security warning.
- Select Run to continue.

- Select the Language you wish to use for the installation.

- Now follow the prompts to guide you through the rest of the application.

- If you agree to the terms of the license than select - I Agree.

- Now select a location to Install Opensim.
- The default location is probably fine for most people C:\Program Files\OpenSim

- Choose a start menu and press install

- You should now see the following screen and this will take 1 to 2 minutes to complete.

- Finally Select Finish.

- You should now have a new menu item on your Start Menu labeled Opensim 0.6.3.

- Click on Opensim and this will start the process to bring up your own Opensim Server.

You can simply press enter for every question the first time as this is probably the easiest method to make sure you have a working environment.
Here is a high level overview of each question that will be asked. For information on other commands please see the Opensimulator Console commands tutorial.
Region Name
This is your Region Name that will be the Name of your Sim.
If you just press enter your region name will be called Test. For the purpose of this tutorial I will call this MyRegion but you can call Your Region anything you like.
DEFAULT REGION CONFIG: Region Name [OpenSim Test]: MyRegion Grid Location.
The default region config is the location your region will be on the MAP. If you have multiple regions then each region needs a separate location. If you want to connect your Sim to the central Grid you will need a unique grid location.
For the purpose of this tutorial I have chosen a grid X access of 900 and a Y access of 900.
DEFAULT REGION CONFIG: Grid Location (X Axis) [1000]: 900 DEFAULT REGION CONFIG: Grid Location (Y Axis) [1000]: 900 Internal IP Address.
The internal IP address is the local IP that you would like the Opensim Server to be configured to. This in most cases is probably your LAN IP. You can find this out through the command IPConfig at a CMD prompt.
- START RUN and type CMD in the the box then press OK.

- Type IPCONFIG and Your IP address is Displayed. Mine is 192.168.1.107.

DEFAULT REGION CONFIG: Internal IP Address for incoming UDP client connections [ 0.0.0.0]: 192.168.1.107
Internal IP Port.
In most cases this can use the default port of 9000 for the server. This is the port that needs to be open on the PC’s firewall for inbound connections. The port will also need to be open on the firewall. I will leave mine set to 9000. You can either just press enter or type the number 9000 (or your port number).
DEFAULT REGION CONFIG: Internal IP Port for incoming UDP client connections [9000]: 9000
External Host Name.
The external host name is required if your Opensim server will be accessible from the internet.
- You need to enter the IP address of the internet facing connection. If you are behind a firewall this will be the IP address that is on the other side of the firewall / Router that is allowing your server to connect to the internet.
- You will need to get this IP address from your router or your internet service provider or if you are not behind a proxy you can try this link. http://whatismyipaddress.com/
- For the purpose of this tutorial I will assume I am not connecting to the Grid and I will just use my LAN IP.
- You will also need to access your router and forward all requests to Port 9000 (If this is the port you chose above) to the LAN IP of your Opensim Server.
DEFAULT REGION CONFIG: External Host Name [127.0.0.1]: 192.168.1.107.
Name of Master Avatar
The Master Avatar is the Avatar that has full in world access. This avatar has unrestricted rights and can change or access anything in world.
The default is Test and we recommend you change it to a name you will probably only use when you need this function. I am going to Call my avatar Super User.
DEFAULT REGION CONFIG: First Name of Master Avatar [Test]: Super.
DEFAULT REGION CONFIG: Last Name of Master Avatar [User]: User. Password for Master Avatar.
Now create a password.
Please do not use anything obvious like password, your friends or dogs name and include a numeric to make it even more secure. My Password for this tutorial will be mys3cretapass.
DEFAULT REGION CONFIG: (Sandbox Mode Only)Password for Master Avatar account [test]: mys3cretpass.
That’s it ! Your first Opensimulator Sim has now been created.
If all has gone to plan you should have a sim up that looks something like this although hopefully it did not take you 42 minutes to bring yours up. Now your Sim is up you need to install the Client and connect to it.
Please see the client installation tutorial for details.
